VMLC firearm classifications and loading requirements 01/01/2005.





Class 1 rifle
- original or replica military issue muzzle loading rifle:
Minie or round ball only. Minimum calibre .531". Sights as issued. Adjustable sights fitted to some replicas not to be adjusted during a competition.
Major alterations to original sights not permitted. Set triggers not permitted.

Class 2 rifle - original or replica traditional style patched ball muzzle loading rifle, percussion or flint ignition:
Any calibre, round ball only. (Class 1 rifles using round ball not permitted in Class 2 competitions).
Original open style sights as on originals. Adjustable sights fitted to some replicas
not to be adjusted during a competition.

Flintlock Rifle - original or replica flintlock rifle:
Any calibre, round ball only. Match, and Wheel locks are included in this class. Original open style sights as on originals.
Adjustable sights fitted to some replicas not to be adjusted during a competition.

Pictured is a Davide Pedersoli Frontier (Lehigh County style) with Curly Maple stock,
available in percussion or flint.





Class 3 rifle - any original or replica muzzle loading rifle:
Rifles which qualify as a Class 1, Class 2, Class 4 or Flintlock Rifle are included in Class 3.
Any type of projectile, any calibre, and any type of ignition. Any type of non-magnifying sights.
Adjustment of sights is permitted during a competition.


Class 4 rifle - any original or replica muzzle loading rifle:
Projectile must be at least 2.5 calibre's in length. Any calibre, and any type of ignition.
Any type of non magnifying sights.
Adjustment of sights is permitted during a competition.

 Muzzle Loading Shotgun:
Maximum calibre 11 gauge. Maximum powder charge 95 grains. Maximum shot charge 1-1/4 oz. Shot size shall be number 7 or smaller.
Percussion or flint ignition. Single or double barrel. Chokes permitted.

Breech Loading Rifle:
Any original or replica single shot or repeating rifle of pre-1890 vintage (excluding the Lee Metford) and ammunition for the firearm
was available to the general public at the time the firearm was marketed.
Any type of non-magnifying sights. Adjustment of sights is permitted during a competition.

Musket – Open Class Smooth Bore:
Any original or replica muzzle loading smooth bore long arm including shotguns.
Any calibre, round ball only. Any type of ignition. Rear sights
and set triggers not permitted unless originally fitted.

Class 3 Handgun:
Except for black powder cartridge handgun events, all competitions are for Class 3 Handgun, which
includes revolvers and single or multiple barrel handguns of original, replica or non-replica status. Any
type of non-magnifying sights. Adjustment of sights is permitted during a competition. Any ignition.
Any calibre. Any projectile. Competitions in which black powder cartridge handguns are to be used
are clearly stated in the competition programme.

Cartridge Revolver
- any original or replica Black Powder Cartridge revolver:

Any type of projectile. Any calibre. Any type of non-magnifying sights.
