Victorian Muzzle Loading Club Competition Awards

For all regular competitions, a gold, silver or bronze coloured card is awarded to first, second and third highest scorers respectively. The muzzle loading rifle aggregate winner for the day also receives a gold card and a quality wine glass which features the VMLC logo in gold. During a Championship month, (ie Breech Loading Rifle, Class 1 ML Rifle, Class 2 ML Rifle, Class 3 ML Rifle, Class 4 ML Rifle, Flintlock ML Rifle, Handgun and ML Shotgun) Open Class competitors are also eligible for a gold, silver or bronze card, as well as a gold card and wine glass for the Open Class aggregate winner.

For the Championship months (which include Breech Loading Rifle, Class 1, Class 2, Class 3, Class 4, Flintlock Rifle, Handgun and ML Shotgun) an appropriate Shield is awarded to the Championship Winner, which they keep for one year, as well as a Championship Trophy.

At the close of the VMLC State Championships, which are held in November every year (see State Champs), the Annual Aggregate Trophies are awarded for the highest aggregate scores for all classes of firearms (ie Breech Loading Rifle, Class 1 Rifle, Class 2 Rifle, Class 3 Rifle, Class 4 Rifle, Flintlock Rifle, Handgun and ML Shotgun). For the State Championships, a gold, silver or bronze style medallion is awarded to first, second and third highest scorers respectively. A similar medallion with blue ribbon is awarded to aggregate winners.

    The VMLC operates a Proficiency Award system where shooting a predetermined score entitles the member to a gold, silver or bronze style medallion. Twenty-nine members have earned a bronze, and twelve members have earned a silver proficiency. As of March 2007, four members have attained a gold proficiency as follows:

    In 1990, Barry Kitchen became the first member to earn a gold proficiency (15 out of 15 Birds with a Muzzle Loading Shotgun).

   Sixteen years passed (April 2006) before a second member, Jim Morraitis, earned a gold proficiency (also 15 out of 15 Birds with a Muzzle Loading Shotgun).

    A few months later, October 2006, Barry Kitchen became the first member to attain a second gold proficiency, this time for scoring 15 out of 15 Birds with a Breech Loading Black Powder Shotgun (shotgun and ammunition supplied by Jim Morraitis).

    In February 2007, Noel Howland became the third member to attain a gold proficiency (15 out of 15 Birds with a Muzzle Loading Shotgun).

    Then in March 2007 a most unexpected event occured when two gold proficiencies were attained in one day when Doug Hill and Jim Morraitis both scored 15 out of 15 Birds with a Breech Loading Shotgun! Doug is the fourth member to attain a gold proficiency, and Jim is the second member to have earned two gold proficiencies.

    The Wren Brown Encouragement Award (Wren Brown (deceased) – VMLC President 1984-85) is awarded to an appropriate member at the close of the State Championships.

The Stuart Doig Most Improved Handgun Shooter Award (Stuart Doing (deceased) - VMLC Member 1989~2008) is awarded to the most improved handgun shooter for the year, at the close of the State Championships.
